A diesel generator set serves as critical emergency equipment. For instance, when a sudden power outage occurs at a company, it can cause employee panic and disrupt operations. At such times, a generator set becomes invaluable, resolving the power crisis and allowing the business to maintain normal function. Today, we will discuss the key precautions for operating a diesel generator set.

What is a Diesel Generator Set?
A diesel generator set is a power generation device that uses diesel as its primary fuel. It converts kinetic energy into electrical and thermal energy by using a diesel engine as the prime mover to drive an alternator (the "generator head"). The complete set mainly consists of three parts:

  1. The Diesel Engine

  2. The Alternator (Generator Head)

  3. The Controller

In more detail, it includes components such as the base frame, diesel engine, base fuel tank, alternator, controller (for operation and protection), cooling system (air-cooled: fan; water-cooled: radiator), and often a canopy or silent enclosure.

To meet diverse needs, generator sets are categorized as stationary or mobile/trailer-mounted. To reduce operational noise and minimize disturbance, designers have developed soundproofed or "silent" generator sets. These involve encasing the set in a metal enclosure lined with acoustic absorption material. Access doors are fitted on the sides for easy maintenance and control.

These canopies not only significantly reduce noise but also allow for outdoor placement. The enclosure acts like a small shelter, providing protection from sun and rain, eliminating the need for a dedicated indoor room. Diesel generator sets are further classified as Prime Power (for continuous use) and Standby Power (for emergency backup). Their power ratings correspond accordingly, with the standard Prime Power rating typically being 80% of the Standby Power rating.

Choosing the Right Type:

  • For applications connected to a main grid, needing power only during outages, a Standby Diesel Generator is suitable.

  • For applications requiring long-term, continuous operation, a Prime Power Diesel Generator is the correct choice. With proper maintenance, a prime power set can run for over 300 days a year.

Understanding Power Ratings:
The relationship is as follows: If a user needs a 100KW generator, a unit with a 100KW Standby Rating will typically have a Prime Power rating of 80KW (100KW * 80% = 80KW).
Important Note: If a silent canopy is added, the generator's output power usually decreases by approximately 10%. Therefore, when purchasing a diesel generator set, it is crucial to account for this power derating when opting for a soundproofed model.
